The Rolex Explorer is one of Rolexs legendary tool watches, launched in 1953 and inspired by mountaineering expeditions such as the one to Everest that same year. The early models established its iconic design: a 36 mm steel case, a black dial and distinctive 3-6-9 hour markers for optimal readability. The reference 1016, produced for many years (approx. 19631989), defined the Explorers identity, combining durability with improved precision and water resistance. In 1989, the model evolved with the reference 14270, which incorporated a sapphire crystal and more modern finishes whilst retaining its classic look. Despite these updates, the Explorer has remained remarkably consistent in terms of design and purpose. Its simplicity, robustness and timeless style make it one of the most versatile watches ever produced.
