Vinification: The grapes are harvested by hand in the last week of September, are then crushed and transferred to tank by gravity. The Brunello endures 18 days maceration / fer-mentation period (29C) with natural yeasts and frequent punch-down of the cap during the first week to promote extraction. The wine is then racked 2/3 times until March, when it is transferred to oak. The aging process takes 3 years in 20HL Allier and Slavonian botte followed by 2 years in bottle. ONLY 14,000 bottles produced.

Once it does, it reveals wild cherry, rose hip, blanched almond and sassy licorice or spice. It is aged in large oak casks for 38 months, and the fruit is farmed organically. The 2020 vintage for Mate's Vineyard was truly remarkable. They have seen some fine wines from this vineyard in the last 30 years but 2020 is the pinnacle of what they have achieved so far. Mate's Vineyard is always the last site we pick each year. In 2020 the grapes certainly had the distinctive Mendoza millerandage, giving many small berries along with the normal sized ones, and as a result a wonderfully concentrated palate texture and fruit richness. Although still somewhat shy on the nose, with bottle age the full palette of complex aromas and bouquet of this wonderful wine will be gradually and seductively revealed. Pairs well with seafood, pasta, chicken, and risotto.

This is such impressive chardonnay in terms of power and complexity, delivering so much with such poise. Aromas of lemons and peaches intersect with lightly spicy oak and brioche on the nose. The palate drops mouth-filling flavors of peach and lemon and winds tight, before exploding long on the finish with a long, nutty afterglow. Perfect chardonnay.

The Chardonnay Mate's Vineyard, appears to have gone on a yoga retreat in 2020: not only is its usual powerful self, but it's remarkably zen too, exuding a sense of calmness. It is full-bodied, round and offers fruit ripeness, but the propensity of the Mendoza clone to hen-and-chicks means that it retains a sense of nerve, with powerful citrusy acidity providing the needle that pulls a tight thread through this wine's core. The 2020 is still far too young, and it is aromatically shy, but even in its full mature glory, it won't exhibit aromatic fireworks - nor should it. This is Chardonnay. Okay, you might detect lemon and limes, white flowers and just-ripe white nectarine, with 30% new oak imbuing an additional layer of savoriness, but when it comes down to it, this wine's trump card is in its shape, texture and persistence.

This is the greatest Cheval des Andes ever. Discrete aromas of blackberries, flowers, stone and licorice. So perfumed. The integration of fruit, tannins and acidity is fantastic. Full-bodied, tight and solid with beautiful depth and integrity. Extremely long and exciting. Complex and compelling with such refinement and length. A blend of 62% malbec and 38% cabernet sauvignon.

Tim Atkin: This is the best young vintage of Cheval des Andes that I've tasted, demonstrating that this LVMH owned bodega has finally and fully hit its stride under winemaker Gérald Gabillet. Made from a deftly integrated blend of Malbec and (the highest yet) 38% Cabernet Sauvignon but no Petit Verdot, this stylishly wooded red doesn't show the heat of the vintage in the slightest. Subtle, balanced and polished, with fine tannins, scented cassis, blackberry and fresh green herb flavours and incredible palate length. World class.

Since its inception in 2010, Porseleinberg has been one of the Cape's most exciting reds, but nothing quite prepared me for the transcendent brilliance of this wine. Influenced by some time at Domaine Jamet in Côte Rôtie - particularly their use of submerged cap during fermentation - Callie Louw has made a stunning Syrah, proving his skills as both farmer and a winemaker. In 2018, the style has shifted, away from power and grip to something more scented and refined.
